Biographical Notes:
 My practice is almost exclusively civil litigation and mediation. The civil practice emphasizes employment and civil rights cases but also includes much commercial litigation, general tort litigation, and other civil cases, representing both plaintiffs and defendants. Over half of the civil practice is in the federal courts. I have been certified since 1996 as a mediator by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission and currently spend about one-third of my time mediating various kinds of legal disputes pending in the state and federal courts. I also often serve as an arbitrator, either individually or on a panel of arbitrators. In addition, I represent some Death Row inmates on a pro bono basis. I have litigated successfully at all levels of the state and federal judicial systems, including the United States Supreme Court (Blackledge v. Allison, 431 U.S. 63 (1977)).
Education:

Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina (B.A., 1967);
Université de Montpellier, France, 1965-66 (Certificat, 1966);
University of North Carolina School of Law, J.D. with honors, 1970; Educational Honors: Order of the Coif; Associate Editor, North Carolina Law Review; Van Hecke-Wettach Citizenship Award; Student Bar Association Certificate of Service.
